As part of its Partner Robot series– the Japanese motor giant showcased its robo-nurses in Tokyo on Tuesday. According to Toyota, the robots can assist in walk training, balance training and patient transfer– features designed to help the elderly or those with handicaps move more freely. TMC Net says Toyota is aiming these bedside helpers at a particular demographic. “With its ‘independent walk assist’ device…the company hopes to position itself as a trusted vendor in an industry that could explode, with Japan’s rapidly aging population.” And the CEO of iRobot corporation explains to CNN Money why health care robots will soon be put to work. “The number of people over the age of 65 is increasing radically. Over the next 12 or 15 years, the number of these people is actually going to double, and this is putting a huge, huge burden on society.” But Toyota isn’t the only manufacturer trying to tap into the robo-care market. Sky News reports… “Rival Japanese automaker Honda Motor Co has developed a sophisticated humanoid robot called Asimo, which can run, talk and dance…Honda also has demonstrated machines worn on the legs that help people move, as have some universities.” Toyota says it wants to get its high-tech robo-nurses on the market by 2013.
