Future of American Healthcare Robot Doctor Remote-Controlled Telemedicine Robots Improving Access to Stroke Care and Treatment The doctor, from miles away, will see you now – through a robot. Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the United States and third leading cause of death. Patients who suffer the most common type, an acute ischemic stroke, only have three hours to receive the only FDA-approved treatment shown to reduce disability from a stroke. That is why it is imperative that patients call 911 and get to a hospital immediately at the first sign of stroke so they can be seen by a specialist who?s able to make a diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment. However, some communities do not have specialized stroke centers with trained teams available to handle stroke cases around-the-clock. To address this issue, across the nation, hospitals without stroke experts on staff are now using telemedicine technology to connect stroke patients with these specialists. With a fully-mobile, remote-controlled robot, a patient can interact live with a specialist miles away through an LCD screen and camera on the robot?s head. The specialist can then determine the type of stroke and recommend the best course of treatment. Talent/Guest: Dr. Omar Qahwash Dr. Qahwash is a neurosurgeon with the Michigan Stroke Network, one of the premier telemedicine networks in the country. Dr. Qahwash provides consults from a control room at Saint Joseph Mercy Oakland in Pontiac, Michigan …
